Living With Others

Living with a roommate in a residence hall can be a challenge, especially if you have never lived with another person. Here are some tips to help you in this area:

  • Keep a good attitude. It can help you in learning more about your roommate and dealing with situations that may arise.
  • Talk to each other. You need to communicate about issues such as guests, noise levels, cleaning the room, use of phone, taking messages, etc.
  • Listen to what your roommate has to say. Open communication means you talk AND listen.
  • Be willing to compromise and be flexible. It’s not a matter of “getting your way” but of finding what the best solution is for all involved.
  • Remember to ask before you borrow something.
  • Take time to know your roommate. Don’t rush to judgment about your roommate…or anyone else. Stereotypes are limiting, often inaccurate, and can keep you from getting to know some amazing people.
