The Case for Katrina: Civic Engagement in the Wake of Cataclysm
(Nexus Conversation Two)

Facing a calamitous natural disaster, Americans responded with compassion and generosity. In the aftermath of Katrina, it was difficult to believe that we are less than completely involved with our communities. Individuals in Pittsburgh and throughout the U.S. were giving money, sending supplies, signing up to volunteer - even offering to open their homes to strangers. Yet on an ordinary day, problems like homelessness seem insurmountable. Members of those involved in the recovery efforts will join us and dialogue with Pittsburghers involved in various relief work.

Our guests from New Orleans are Ben Johnson, Greater New Orleans Charitable Foundation; Carol Bebelle, Ashe Cultural Center; and Errol Barron, Tulane University School of Architecture. Local respondents will include Scott Izzo, Richard King Mellon Foundation, an artist and a design professional.
