  Benefits Policies

Benefits Policies

Robert Morris University is proud to offer a competitive and comprehensive benefit program to eligible University employees and their family members.  Your employee benefit program is an important element of your total compensation.  This program is continually reviewed to ensure it remains competitive and cost effective.  At all times, Robert Morris University reserves the right to amend, modify, terminate or add to the benefits it offers.

The Open Enrollment period for benefit elections is typically held in April or May of each year. Robert Morris University's benefit plan year runs from June 1 through May 31.  Outside of the Open Enrollment period, only "Qualified Status Changes" allow for changes to benefit elections.  See the Qualified Status Change policy for compliance rules and regulations relating to qualified status changes.

In order to comply with Benefit eligibility requirements, it is necessary to provide proof of full-time student status for any and all dependent children between the ages of 19 and 25 who are covered under RMU's medical, dental and/or vision benefits.

Certification for a full-time student includes one of the following:

* copy of current school schedule confirming a minimum of 12 credits,

* copy of a current school registration, or

* letter from the Registrar's Office (on school letterhead) identifying the student and confirming a current (12 credit minimum) schedule.

Submission of this proof of full-time student status is necessary in order for your dependent children between the ages of 19 and 25 to remain covered under your current RMU benefits.  It is required that proof be provided to Mary McAuliffe, Benefits Department, at the beginning of each fall and spring semester for dependents between the ages of 19 and 25.

When a covered dependent child turns age 25, he/she will remain covered through the month of their birthday.  At that time he/she will be eligible to elect COBRA coverage through Robert Morris University.  He/she will receive written notice of this from the Benefits Department approximately one month prior to turning age 25.

If your dependent is no longer a full-time student (qualified status change), COBRA will be offered. When there is a qualified status change, it is the responsibility of the employee to notify the Benefits Department within 31 days of the date of the qualified status change.

If you have benefit related questions, please contact Mary McAuliffe, FPC, Benefits & Student Payroll Administrator or Lori Carnvale, CEBS, Director, Benefits & Payroll.
