Men's Basketball Falls to No. 6 Seed Wagner, 69-65, in NEC Tourney Quarterfinal

Freshman guard Mark Porter scored 17 points while setting career-highs in rebounds (9), assists (9) and steals (3) in leading No. 6 seed Wagner to a 69-65 upset of No. 3 Robert Morris Thursday night at the Charles L. Sewall Center in a Northeast Conference Tournament Quarterfinal game. The Seahawks now move on to face No. 1 Monmouth in the semifinals Sunday, March 6, at 1:00 p.m. at Boylan Gymnasium in West Long Branch, N.J. Wagner improved to 12-16 overall on the 2004-05 season, while Robert Morris closes its campaign with an overall record of 14-15.

Robert Morris opened the game on an 11-5 run as senior forward Mark Anderson scored four points and the Colonials received a three-pointer from senior guard Christopher Gooden. Wagner was able to cut its deficit to 11-10 after a fastbreak layup by Porter, but senior guard Maurice Carter’s three-pointer upped RMU to a 14-10 lead with 11:10 to play in the first half. Wagner used an 11-4 run to take a 21-18 lead with 6:37 left before the break, as junior guard DeEarnest McLemore and Porter each scored four points. Trailing, 23-22, with 3:43 remaining before halftime, the Colonials closed the half on a 9-6 run to take a 31-29 advantage into the break. Carter started the surge with a three-pointer, while senior forward Chaz McCrommon and freshman guard Tony Lee each added trifectas for RMU.

Robert Morris upped its lead to six, 35-29, in the first minute of the second half thanks to a pair of free throws by senior center Mark Anderson and a jumper from sophomore guard Derek Coleman, but Wagner wouldn’t allow the Colonials to make a huge run to extend its lead. After a jumper by Anderson gave the Colonials a 38-33 lead, an old-fashioned three-point play by Porter kept Wagner within two, 38-36, and with an Anderson dunk on RMU’s next possession, the Seahawks answered with another layup by Porter to keep it a one possession game, 40-38.

Lee would come through for the Colonials with a three-pointer to up RMU’s lead to 43-38, but Wagner used an 11-3 run to take a 49-46 lead with 9:13 to play. Sophomore guard Matt Vitale hit a three-pointer during the spurt for the Seahawks, while Porter, McLemore and senior center Sean Munson each hit key baskets. Robert Morris was able to claw back and take a 52-51 lead with 7:51 to go after a dunk by Anderson, but Munson’s layup on Wagner’s ensuing possession gave the Seahawks the lead for good, 53-52. Munson upped Wagner’s lead to 60-54 thanks to an inside layup with 3:36 remaining and were able to seal the game in the last 34 seconds as Porter, sophomore forward Durell Vinson and Munson combined to go 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Porter led four Seahawks in double figures with 17 points on 7-for-14 shooting, tying a career-high for field goals. In a balanced Wagner attack, Munson added 15 points, Vinson 12 and McLemore 10. Anderson scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field to lead Robert Morris, while McCrommon added 13 points, Lee 12 and Carter 10. Lee added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Colonials.

Robert Morris shot just 42.6 percent (23-for-54) from the field, while Wagner converted 50.9 percent (27-for-53) of its shots, including 56 percent (14-for-25) in the second half. The Seahawks dominated inside, outscoring the Colonials, 38-14, in points in the paint while posting a 10-2 scoring advantage in points off turnovers.

Notes: It marks the fourth time Wagner has knocked off the No. 3 seed in the NEC Tournament as a the No. 6 seed and it also marks the ninth time for the feat in tournament history … Carter finishes his career at Robert Morris with 217 career three-pointers, one shy of the school record, held by former Colonial Aaron Thomas (2000-04) with 218 … McCrommon finishes his Colonial career third all-time on the scoring ledger with 1,623 career points, while Carter finishes fourth with 1,506.
