The sociology minor is a beneficial program for any student who is interested in learning more about social behavior. Interestingly, when professionals lose their jobs for reasons other than downsizing or when they fail to earn a promotion, the principal reason given is not typically a lack of technical competence. Often it is a lack of effective professional relationships which impacts negatively on careers. This may be related to a limited understanding of social organizations. Thus, increasing knowledge about social behavior may improve one's ability to function effectively in social relationships.

Coursework in the sociology minor explores diverse components of society, including minority groups, deviant behavior, marriages and families, and women. The minor also provides students with the opportunity to choose two courses from a list of options, and this flexibility gives students the ability to "customize" the program based on their career goals and interests.
