ELIT1060 - Reading Literature: Myths
Fall 2011

This course teaches students the processes of close reading, analysis and interpretation of literature and invites students to make connections between literature and their experiences. Students learn to distinguish between reading for comprehension and reading for pleasure, to recognize key principles of storytelling, and to distinguish types of literary works. Introducing students to texts that are international and multicultural in scope as well as to Western literature, the course focuses on the repeatable, universal patterns that inform various literatures and cultures and the effects of various cultural myths on literary works.

This is a literature course with plenty of local Irish sites and many adventures during our two week visit to Northern Ireland and the Republic. Our focus will be on Celtic myths, the stories that make up the Ulster cycle, the stories of the Red Branch Knights of Emain Macha, particularly the heroic struggles of Cuchulainn. These Celtic stories live today in the minds of Irish folks everywhere The class will meet four times before the trip. Students who register for the course are required to go on the 2014 study trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland May 11-May 25, 2014. Costs for airfare, housing, etc. are in addition to tuition. If you are interested in taking this course, contact the Center for Global Engagement at 412-397-2151 or email Rick Moslen at Moslen@rmu.edu.
