Counselor/Retention for Specialized Student Populations

The Human Resources Department announces the position of Counselor/Retention for Specialized Student Populations reporting to the Director, Center for Student Success.

Responsibilities include: provide professional counseling programs and services on academic, financial, and career issues for freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students; work with student athletes to monitor academic progress related to eligibility requirements and determine tutoring and assistance needs; provide academic program advising and course registration; serve as a liaison with academic departments and academic services; develop and present educational programs and workshops in conjunction with other student and academic affairs departments; participate in the Freshman Orientation; teach First-Year Experience and Study Skills each semester; monitor the students in the Pittsburgh Promise Program; consult with academic departments, enrollment management, and student affairs organizations to better assist incoming students; serve as advisor to one or more student organizations; develop retention-related services, programs and workshops; and performs related work as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in counseling, education, human resources, student personnel, or a related field preferred.

  • Minimum two years of experience in counseling and advising, preferably in a higher education environment.

  • Thorough knowledge of college student development theory, and academic advising.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Familiar with current trends in higher education and technology, and the ability to enhance the use of technology and other resources to meet student needs.

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills with a high energy level.

  • Ability to develop and deliver effective personal, social, career, and student development programs to individuals and groups.

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and public speaking skills.

  • Customer-service oriented; student focused.

  • Ability to work a varied schedule with flexible hours; weekend/evening hours may be required.
